Bernal Heights - From Shack to Chic
A piece of San Francisco history, located at 331 Prentiss Street, has recently come on the market. The home was a former earthquake shack from 1907 after the original structure burned in the Great Quake. Earthquake refugee shacks provided housing until 1907. When the refugee camps were disbanded, the displaced owners from Prentiss Street hauled two of the “shacks” back to the property, combining them to make one home. Major renovations have been made, of course, including expansion from the original 550 square feet, but many of the shack’s elements have been maintained. The two bedroom, two bath home is listed at $1.15 million.

Elsewhere in Bernal Heights, the home at 352 Richland Avenue has also undergone a complete renovation. Located on a quiet street, the views are breathtaking from this four bedroom, three bath home which includes a media room in the basement. Listed at $1,749,000.

And on the other end of the spectrum, a corner unit, two bedroom, two bath condominium is listed at $699,000. Although built in 2003, the building boasts a Victorian facade and some lovely views. Located at 199 Tiffany Street, #311, the building features a large common-area courtyard.
San Francisco Decorator Showcase
The much-anticipated, highly-attended design event of the year – San Francisco Decorator Showcase – is now underway. The Showcase is located in a 9,000 square foot 1907 mansion at 3660 Jackson Street.

This year marks the 37th anniversary of the Showcase, and all the top regional interior and landscape designers have contributed to the dazzling displays of what’s hot in the wonderful world of design. As an added bonus, this year’s festivities include cooking demonstrations with top Bay Area chefs.

The event will be featured in the October issue of House Beautiful. Proceeds benefit the San Francisco University High School Financial Aid program. Over $12.5 million in student financial aid has been raised since 1977.

The Showcase is open to the public through Memorial Day, May 26, and tickets may be purchased at the door or online. Check website for hours. Parking is limited, and public transportation is recommended.
