Scaregrove is Back for One Day Only!
Homes Made Mobile - When the City Moved Several Victorians
San Francisco is well known for its Victorian architecture throughout the City. But it's not just the Painted Ladies along "Postcard Row" in Alamo Square. Many different neighborhoods host an eclectic blend of Victorian and modern Architecture. And in the mid 70's, as part of urban renewal efforts focused on the Western Addition and the Fillmore district - several Victorian buildings were physically picked up and re-planted from one neighborhood to another.

This gallery shared by has extraordinary photos of the moving of the homes. The images have a surreal quality to them, showing workers raising and towing these iconic pieces of San Francisco skyline from one neighborhood to another like they are pieces from a theater set.

The relocation effort was managed by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (now the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure) that worked toward revitalizing traditionally lower income neighborhoods. Houses like these could be purchased for a small fee (sometimes as low as a single dollar) plus the cost of relocating the building. A seriously different angle on the oft-repeated selling point of: location, location, location.
