Biking Safe Enough for Kids in SF?

Sometimes it can feel like you're putting your life on the line when you try to take a leisurely bike ride in the City, but that could be changing soon thanks to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Connecting the City campaign. The intention of the campaign is to create a network of routes that are comfortable and safe for riders of all ages.

The first project would be a world-class, bi-directional, physically-separated bikeway along a 1.5-mile stretch of Golden Gate Park's JFK Drive. This would be the first section of the planned 3-mile "Bay to Beach Route."

According to an article on
"Separated bikeways are expected to dramatically boost the number of bicyclists on key routes by providing a comfortable and safe continuous green ribbon of bikeways, with designs similar to New York City's recent Prospect Park West Bikeway. Results there have shown a drastic reduction in speeding motor traffic and overall crashes along with a tripling of weekday cycling."

Mid Market Street Theatre District
The American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) is in negotiations to purchase and renovate a run-down lot at the corner of Market and Turk. The project would involve converting the space into a world-class, 300-seat theater within a multi-story complex that would include housing for visiting performers, classrooms, retail and cabaret space. The total cost of the project is estimated at $100 million.

This project has the potential to bring new life and restore Mid Market Street into the vibrant theatre district it once was. Currently, the group is looking for partners and determining the feasibility of raising $100 million to buy, demolish, design and build the new center. This would involve the purchase of three lots and would leave the Warfield and Crazy Horse as the only remaining existing buildings on the block.

What does this mean for the residents of San Francisco? Hundreds of jobs, something more positive than illegal activity and peddling during evening hours, and a theater for A.C.T. that would allow them to bring "riskier and more intimate work" to the City. (The current A.C.T. theater holds 1,000 people and typically houses "safer and more mainstream" productions).

The new space would sit across from the 265,000 square foot CityPlace Mall, which is set to break ground this Spring. A revitalized Mid Market Street -- can't wait!
Let's Play Monopoly in the Mission
As we reported last year, Gus Murad, owner of Medjool, has been facing issues with regards to his outdoor bar/club space on Mission Street. Apparently, Murad is exhausted of the troubles. This week Medjool (2522 Mission) and the attached Elements Hostel (2516 Mission) went on the market for $7.1 Million.

In addition, the large Giant Value building located down the block (2558 Mission) is for sale at the price of $4.5 Million.

But wait, that's not all. The New Mission Theater (2550 Mission) is also for sale for $2 million.

$13.6 Million and you can essentially buy the block (just like buying up all those red squares on the Monopoly board).

Recent news indicates there may be a buyer VERY interested in the New Mission Theater. Commercial Realtor Collen Mehary stated, "We're talking to a very hot group from New York on coming into the New Mission Theater. You think the Mission is hot right now, but if this deal goes through, the Mission is going to explode."

An exploding 2500 block of the Mission? Let the party begin!
